Each LOHR ASTOR piece is finished by hand. With a little care, it will keep its beauty for generations.

Dishwasher and microwave. Our pieces are dishwasher and microwave safe, provided they carry no precious metals — whether on the edging of the china or incorporated within a printed design on its surface. To protect the decoration from fading, we recommend short, low-temperature washes with a mild detergent. Any piece featuring gold or precious-metal detailing should always be washed by hand, and must never be placed in a dishwasher, microwave, or oven, as heat, harsh detergents, and abrasion will wear the gilding over time.

Washing. For pieces with precious metals, wash by hand in warm water with a mild detergent and a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid abrasive scourers, harsh powders, and bleach, which can dull the glaze and the decoration. Even where a piece is dishwasher safe, hand washing will always best preserve its finish.

Everyday care. Wash soon after use rather than leaving food to stand, as acidic foods can mark the glaze over time. Handle gently, and avoid knocking the rims against taps or hard surfaces.

Storing. When stacking plates, place a soft felt protector between each one to prevent the surfaces and gilding from scratching. Store cups and bowls without nesting them tightly, and keep stacks low to avoid pressure on the pieces beneath.

Every LOHR ASTOR piece is made to order, created especially for you. We also offer personalisation upon request, to make a piece entirely your own. For this reason, each order is final once placed, and we are unable to accept returns or exchanges for change of mind.

Should a piece arrive damaged or faulty, please inspect your order upon receipt and contact us within 72 hours of delivery. We will gladly arrange an exchange.

How does LOHR ASTOR ensure its products are safe for food use, and which standards are followed?

All LOHR ASTOR fine bone china is made in England from lead-free materials and manufactured in accordance with European food-contact regulations EC 1935/2004 and EC 2023/2006 on good manufacturing practice. Each design is independently tested for food-contact safety — the release of lead and cadmium — at a UKAS-accredited laboratory, against the following standards:

• European Union and United Kingdom — Council Directive 84/500/EEC, as amended by Commission Directive 2005/31/EC, with sample preparation to BS EN 1388-1 & -2.
• United States — U.S. FDA Compliance Policy Guides 7117.06 (Section 545.400) and 7117.07 (Section 545.450).

In every test, lead and cadmium release fell well within — and far below — the permitted limits for both flatware and hollowware.

California (Proposition 65). The State of California sets stricter thresholds than U.S. federal standards under Proposition 65. Where these thresholds are exceeded, LOHR ASTOR informs the retailer accordingly; the product may still be sold provided the end customer is correctly informed, as required by law.

Our pieces are also tested for thermal shock resistance to BS EN 1183, meeting the requirements of BS 8654:2015, confirming their durability through the everyday changes in temperature of normal use.
